EDHEC research suggests that the traditional approach to private wealth management is misguided

The results of a new study by EDHEC-Risk entitled “Asset-Liability Management in Private Wealth Management,” by Noël Amenc, Lionel Martellini, Vincent Milhau and Volker Ziemann, suggest that suitable extensions of portfolio optimisation techniques used by institutional investors can be transposed to private wealth management, precisely because these techniques have been engineered to incorporate in the portfolio construction process an investor's specific context, objectives, and horizon.

Local Government Pension Institution LGPI licenses ALM solution from Ortec Finance

LGPI, the pension institution for local governments in Finland, has signed an agreement with Ortec Finance to license its Asset Liability solution for pension plans, Ortec Finance PALM. The ALM solution enables LGPI to formulate ALM strategies based on Ortec Finance state of the art scenario generation, asset and liability methodologies. The selection was made after a thorough search and evaluation process.

Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) licences ALM solution from ORTEC Finance HOOPP, one of the largest defined benefit pension plans in Canada, has signed an agreement with ORTEC Finance to license and implement their Asset Liability solution for pension plans (PALM). The ALM solution enables HOOPP to conduct risk/return analyses for the entirety of the pension plan. These analyses will support decision making concerning strategic investment policies and other policy instruments taking the dynamics of the pension liabilities explicitly into account. The selection of Ortec PALM was made after a thorough search and evaluation process.

Performance analysis of Allianz investments to be calculated with Ortec Finance’s performance solution. IDS GmbH – Analysis and Reporting Services (IDS), the analysis and reporting services company of Allianz SE, has signed an agreement to license and implement Ortec Finance’s performance evaluation & attribution system (PEARL). The decision of IDS was made after a thorough selection process. With the implementation of PEARL, IDS will phase out its current performance attribution system and also enhance their analysis and reporting service.

EDHEC sets up a research chair in Private Asset Liability Management in partnership with ORTEC Finance The EDHEC Risk and Asset Management Research Centre and ORTEC Finance have announced the creation of a new research chair in Private ALM focused on understanding the application of Asset-Liability Management (ALM) methodology in Private Wealth Management (PWM). The research chair is a three-year research programme piloted by a joint ORTEC/EDHEC committee.

Pension Fund PNO Media selects PRISMA The industry-wide pension fund for the media, PNO Media, has selected PRISMA to monitor the short-term cover ratio risk. For several years now PNO Media has been using the ORTEC Monitor, a service through which ORTEC facilitates a monthly risk report based on the data provided by the client. With the implementation of ORTEC’s PRISMA, PNO Media is now able to independently process these data and draw up reports themselves.

Första AP-fonden successfully implements ORTEC’s ALM software Första AP-fonden (AP1), one of the five buffer funds in Sweden, has successfully implemented the Asset Liability Management Solution for Pension Funds (PALM) from ORTEC Finance. This enables AP1 to conduct comprehensive risk analyses of the Swedish National Pension System and supports AP1 in strategic decision making and formulating effective long-term investment strategies.

At the tenth annual pension symposium organised by Pensioen, Bestuur & Management, ORTEC received the award for “excellent communication by a commercial provider in the pension market”. “ORTEC developed an innovative and convenient pension planner, www.CheckMijnPensioen.nl, that not only combines the pension overviews of the participants, but also takes the entire family income into consideration”, according to the report of the jury.

Dozens of pension funds, both big and small, took the time and energy to impress the NPN jury with their best practices this year. Guus Boender, currently on the Supervisory Board of ORTEC International, took home the most prestigious award of the night.

Robeco selects ORTEC for performance measurement

Robeco selects ORTEC for performance measurement The Dutch asset manager Robeco has selected ORTEC’s performance measurement and attribution tool PEARL to measure and manage its equity and fixed-income investments, as well as their money market and real estate funds. The first tool to be utilized in Robeco’s new “financial service center” PEARL will help to better answer the needs and demands of the Robeco business lines in their current and future dealings. Robeco will run the system for about 300 portfolios.

Continuity Analysis

Continuity Analysis On January 1st of 2007 the new Dutch pension law took effect. As a result, the financial assessment framework (FTK) was activated as well. The FTK discusses, apart from the solvency test, the continuity analysis (CA). Many aspects of the continuity analysis should be familiar by now: the analysis is meant to gain insight in the (financial) development of the fund and the driving power of the policy instruments. The forecast period is 15 years and limitations are set for the utilised (economic) starting points.
